Roulette in the Movies: A brief history of the Devil's Game in film

Every so often a film has the chance to place a very stylish game into their production. Some are more noteworthy than others, and I'm sure you know the common ones. The classic film Casablanca with the classic cast of Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman feature a very emotional but famous scene where roulette is played.

In contrast, the recent film Indecent Proposal with Robert Redford follows the same kind of story where the roll of the roulette wheel is followed by an immediate tragedy that is mainly the key to the story. Unlikely enough the film, The Sting, which stars Robert Redford and Paul Newman, is about a con man who cons others with a trick roulette machine wheel only to be tricked in the end by a similar device.

If you caught the German film Run Lola Run, you would see the final climax of the film where Lola used her last hundred Marks to purchase a chip in a fancy casino only to let it ride and it wins again!

Even Marilyn Monroe in her famous icon film Diamonds are Forever has featured the roulette wheel. I guess the best part of the film is Franka Potente being in it, but it still makes the real star even brighter to feature a great game like roulette. More oddly enough, there have been weirder versions shown such as the scene in The Deer Hunter that featured Russian Roulette. If you're a fan of the wheel there is always the thrill and excitement involved when you see the celebs playing it in a film. Even more so that a game like baccarat which only seems to show up in James Bond films...
